How play therapy helps
Play therapy allows the child to process their feelings and thoughts in an emotionally safe space using play as the main method of communication and learning. Children are not required to talk, but instead process in a more implicit way to help understand more about themselves and their world. The learning that takes place during this play is much more easily accessed when frustrated or emotional because implicit learning is more readily available when our brains are escalated or emotional.
Meet our clinician
Matt Beebe, LPC
Matt is the owner of SCFC and has four years in the play therapy world. He was formerly a special education teacher and has transferred his skills to the counseling world. Matt primarily uses Child Centered Play Therapy modalities, but also uses Person-Centered Therapy, and Internal Family Systems to support a diverse range of clients. Matt is bilingual (English and Spanish) and feels strongly about working from a multicultural lens to increase therapy access for marginalized communities.
In 2024, Matt won the Mental Health Champion Award from the Virginia Health Care Foundation for his service to the communities and increasing access to those most in need of services.
